Burst pipes and major leaks
Water where it shouldn’t be is the call we get most. We talk you to the stopcock on the phone so the damage stops spreading, then get to you to repair the pipe properly, not just patch it.
Stop the water first
- Turn off the stopcock. It is usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes where the water pipe comes into the house.
- Turn off the boiler and heating.
- If water is near sockets or light fittings, switch off the electrics at the fuse box, but only if the box is dry.
- Open the cold taps to drain the pipes, and move valuables away from the water.
Boiler breakdowns
No heat in January isn’t a “next week” problem. We repair and maintain central heating and hot water systems, and because we are Gas Safe registered we can work on the gas side too. Often we can diagnose it over the phone or on FaceTime before we arrive.
A few quick checks
- Check the pressure gauge on the boiler. Most need around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold.
- Check the thermostat is turned up and the timer is on.
- If the boiler shows a fault code, write it down, it helps us diagnose it on the phone.
- Press the reset button once. If it locks out again, leave it and call.
Blocked toilets and drains
Blocked toilets, sinks and drains cleared quickly and cleanly, usually on the first visit, and we leave the room as we found it.
Stop it getting worse
- Stop flushing or running water into it.
- Don’t pour chemical drain cleaner down it, it can splash back when the blockage is cleared.
- If it is overflowing, put towels down and keep children and pets away.
No hot water
Cylinder, immersion or combi trouble diagnosed and fixed, the same day wherever the parts allow.
Before we come out
- Make sure the boiler has power and is not showing a fault.
- Check the boiler pressure is around 1 to 1.5 bar.
- If you have a hot water cylinder, check the immersion switch is on.
- Note any fault code on the display.
Gas work and safety
We are Gas Safe registered for all gas work: repairs, appliance installs and safety checks, done by the book. Always check a tradesperson is Gas Safe registered before they touch your boiler or gas appliances.
If you can smell gas, act now
- Don’t use light switches, flames or anything that could spark.
- Open doors and windows.
- Turn the gas off at the meter if you can do it safely.
- Get everyone outside.
Tanks, overflows and valves
Overflowing tanks, dripping overflow pipes, failed valves and leaking taps. Small parts that cause big damage if they are left, sorted properly.
While you wait
- If a tank or cistern is overflowing, turn off the stopcock or the small isolation valve on the pipe feeding it.
- Put a bucket or towels under any drip.
- Don’t ignore a dripping overflow pipe outside, it usually means a valve has failed inside.
